If Junk Mail is keeping the PO open, then Junk Mail is causing landfills to increase. Where I live there is a trash can at each set of mail boxes where it is deposited straight out of the mailbox. All the money beggers in the world can't get a dime out of this overstressed retiree already subsidizing three out of work adult children.! Let the PO fail, who needs it?

Star Wars commemorative stamp collection, an amazing life-size, stand-up cardboard cutout of C3PO placed in our small town post office. It was something any Star Wars collector would love to own (me included). Instead of auctioning them off after the promotion, I was told that they must be destroyed — an incredible waste of resources and lost opportunity for revenues. The strategy has always been to sell a few more stamps.

The postal service should also consider partnering with other industries to create new technologies to become more sustainable. The postal fleet represents a remarkable opportunity to test new vehicle technologies. The article makes the case- http://www.ncms.org/blog/post/10-savethemail.aspx

Hmm...thought provoking. Not too many stop to think about the Post Office and its current technological battles, nevermind its impact on sustainability. It's hard to imagine that one day, we may not have a physical Post Office. These days everything is done electronically. Networking, correspondence, Thank-You notes, coupons...all online. When you look at it from an environmentalist's standpoint, I want to applaud the Post Office for its previous efforts to be sustainable. I've always believed that it is best to TRY, even if you fail, at least you've tried. If the Post Office is, in fact, declining in relevance and usefulness, it might be most sustainable if we just let it go. It will be strange leaving behind such an American tradition, but as you said, we must keep with the times.

Delivering Sustainability is a good article and has valid points; although, I don’t believe the PMG is ignoring the cultural changes of how we communicate. Instead, the USPS are trying to react to the situation within the constraints of the law and current economic situation. One shouldn’t expect the back seat driver to do much of anything regarding the issues raised in this article, though. In my opinion they only act when it’s a crisis and they are terribly short-sighted – rarely able to see beyond anything that influences their electability.

Here is additional information on the pension fund issue:

Yes, that is $75billion.
