Sustainability is the Need of the Hour

Published on November 21st, 2016 | by

The population of the world continues to grow, but resources don’t seem to keep up with the growing need of the population. Food shortage is rampant in many countries, particularly in poor countries. Water shortage has also become a big issue now. Although the earth is surrounded mostly by water, clean and potable water is a problem.

Mineral resources are also getting depleted. This is why there is a growing campaign for copper recycling, waste segregation, and other similar programs. Private institutions and government are now taking some measures to address such problems. However, it doesn’t seem to solve them overnight.

Environmental Control

Mining activities have been very aggressive in the last several decades. Some countries are now complaining of running out of minerals to utilize. There are minerals that are not eco-friendly. The problem lies in the recyclable products that are simply wasted and thrashed out elsewhere while some parts of the world are in need of them. There is a need to control mining activities and to manage available mineral resources.

Food shortage is not directly caused by expanding population. It is caused by environmental factors such as climate change, pollution, drought, calamity, and disasters. Although there is little to be done to control nature, contingency measures can possibly reduce the effect. Environmental control can also optimize and maximize the use of available resources.

Land Use

Everywhere, urban development seems unstoppable. Conversions of land continue to move horizontally. The implication is that farm lands, which can be maximized for food production are being developed to be used by manufacturing industries and residential developers. Moreover, there are many portions of land that are not utilized for the production of food and other raw materials.

In addition, some countries only focus on a specific industry. All their lands are dedicated to producing a certain type of raw materials and other natural supplies. When such industry is struck by natural calamity, the whole supply is greatly affected. For this reason, there must be a plan for diversification of the use of land.

Farming

Farming is the solution to perennial food shortage. Not all people want to live and work on a farm, so the government should have a sustainable program to help the existing farm industries to have better yield. Furthermore, innovation is the key. The use of new technology in farming must ensure increased production of high-quality yield.

There is also a movement to go back to organic farming. This advocacy must also be supported by everyone. If organic farming becomes massive, there is no need to artificially process food because artificial food processing somehow contributes to environmental degradation.

Recycling

Glass, steel and metals should not be dumped randomly. These are heavy objects that can destroy the environment if not managed. However, if these objects are recycled, the benefit is more than double. Metals must be segregated from waste. They originate from mining and will never reproduce when sent back to nature. They are not like wood, which can be reproduced by tree planting.

Recycling companies contribute a lot in this particular endeavour. What is needed to support them is to supply them with all recyclable materials, so that there is no need to use up all remaining mineral resources.

Conclusion

Natural resources diminish when there is no proper program towards sustainability. Nonetheless, effort to make it happen should start from anyone and not only from big institutions such as government and private companies. Every little thing we do contributes a lot in saving the earth if what we do is beneficial to the environment.
