I am in Burlington, Vermont attending the Ben & Jerry’s Fair Trade Blogger Fest. Earlier this year, the ice cream company announced its plans “to go fully Fair Trade” for all its global flavors by the end of 2013… definitely an ambition goal.
So for the next two days, bloggers from around the country will learn more about Ben & Jerry’s Social Mission goals, tour the Waterbury Factory, meet the Ben & Jerry’s Flavor Gurus (research and development), and taste a lot of fun, unique ice cream flavors (fingers crossed).
Ben & Jerry’s was recently in the news for removing the words “all natural” from its labels. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) told the company in August that it shouldn’t use the phrase “all natural” if products contain alkalized cocoa, corn syrup and hydrogenated oil. The super premium ice cream maker agreed, because it didn’t want to battle over the definition of “all natural”. The FDA has not set a clear definition so the phrase can and does have many different meanings.
I’m sure this and many other issues will be discussed over the next couple of fun-filled days. I’m looking forward to meeting the fine folks at Ben & Jerry’s and my fellow food and sustainability bloggers.
