"CherryPal

Mountain View, California-based startup CherryPal announced that it is now shipping a fully green desktop PC (the C114) as of December 2nd, just in time for it to be a perfect green Christmas present. Although it is a desktop, it is about the size of a paperback book – perfect for space limited computer users. It consumes only 2 Watts of power (the company’s website tells us this is about the same as a clock radio), and uses cloud computing, so there is no need to run the constant virus and spyware checkers that consumes another valuable resource, time. As it uses 80% fewer parts than most PCs, it generates less waste in the manufacturing process. As electronics manufacturing uses many toxic and hard to eliminate chemicals, it showed great foresight on the part of the founder of CherryPal (and ingenuity) in designing it this way.

The C114 also has no moving parts, meaning it should last about 10 years. This is significant, as computer junk has become a large contributor to the size of our landfills, despite the newly emerging electronics recycling efforts I see throughout Silicon Valley.

The specifications are also impressive, and are listed as:

Freescale’s MPC5121e mobileGT processor, 800

MIPS (400 MHz) of processing

256 MB of DDR2 DRAM

8GB NAND Flash-based solid state drive

(increased from 4GB C100)

WiFi 802.11b/g Wi-Fi

Two USB 2.0 ports

One 10/100 Ethernet with RJ-45 jack

One VGA DB-15 display out jack

Headphone level stereo audio out 3.5mm jack

9vDC 2.5mm 10 watt AC-DC adapter power supply

Weighs 10 ounces

1.3” high, 5.8” x 4.2” wide

At $249/each, it is also an economical present (contact me and I can also send you a coupon).

It comes with Skype, a Firefox browser, a media player, and Open Office (a Sun-based Microsoft alternative) installed.

As two of the most significant contributors to home power use are TVs and PCs, it would make a big impact if everyone switched to CherryPal. The only downside (is it really a downside?), is that this system doesn’t run Microsoft Office. Open Office is supposed to be compatible with Microsoft, but I haven’t had the opportunity to test this.

If you want to give green this Christmas, here is one great idea.
