The Sonata battery by Boston-Power

HP teams with U.S. based Boston-Power to create the first line of eco-friendly laptops.

In the race to come up with newer eco-friendly laptop solutions HP has not only led the way, but helped achieve a few firsts in the process, according to a recent Boston-Power press release.

Not only will HP be launching what it calls its new “Enviro” series of notebooks, but it will also be teaming with Boston-Power to be the first manufacturer to bring a product of this type to market.

The Enviro series will be powered by Boston-Powers new Sonata battery, a Lithium-ion battery which the company claims will deliver like-new performance for three years, longer than any other battery on the market. The U.S. manufacturer backs up its claims with a 3 year warranty, a first for any battery manufacturer and all part of Boston-Power’s commitment to environmental sustainability, keeping electronic waste out of landfills.

The move also has an added bonus for the struggling U.S. economy, the deal will make the well funded U.S. manufacturer the first U.S. based company to be a major player in the laptop battery market, currently dominated by foreign companies such as Sony, Sanyo, Samsung, Panasonic and LG. This will undoubtedly create new job and economic growth in this sector of industry in the U.S., but Boston-Power has not released any job creation estimates as of this date.

Boston-Power is also the first and only battery provider to win the Nordic Ecolabel award.

Hewlett-Packard also plans to include the Sonata battery technology in its future Pavilion and Presario lines. Eco-friendly consumers can begin to find HP laptops with Sonata technology in stores in early 2009.
