To foster a dialogue on employing public policy to create jobs that lift working families out of poverty, Local 32BJ, together with the Community Service Society, the National Employment Law Project and NYU’s Wagner School of Public Service, will bring together key government, academic, civic and labor leaders and policy makers for The Summit on Eliminating Poverty Among the Working Poor. The day-long Summit will be comprised of interactive panel discussions beginning tomorrow at 9:00 AM.
With New York now showing the widest income gap of all urban centers and double-digit poverty rates bearing down on most East Coast urban centers, the Summit is the first, in what hopes to be a series of local, state and federal level conversations about taking immediate and aggressive steps to reduce poverty, especially among the growing ranks of the working poor.
Guest speakers, including Cecilia Estolano, CEO of the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency, will share their experiences on successful anti-poverty initiatives. Panel discussions will include: Leveraging Cities’ Economic Tools to Create Middle Class Jobs, Measuring Poverty, Industry Targeted Approaches for Improving Low Wage Jobs and Discrimination and Access to Good Jobs.
