Corporate Responsibility Magazine recently released its 12th annual “100 Best Corporate Citizens List,” according to’s press release.  The list takes into account performance in seven key areas: environment, climate change, human rights, philanthropy, employee relations, financial and governance.  See which US companies are leading the pack in corporate citizenship:

  1. Johnson Controls Inc.
  2. Campbell Soup Co.
  3. International Business Machines Corp.
  4. Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.
  5. Mattel, Inc.
  6. 3M Co.
  7. Accenture plc
  8. Kimberly-Clark Corp.
  9. Hewlett-Packard Co.
  10. Nike, Inc.

It is interesting that in the weighting of the seven data categories that measure corporate citizenship, financial performance accounts for only 12.5% of the rating.  This puts financial issues ahead of governance (9%) and philanthropy  (7%) only, while environment and climate change represent 36% between them, employee relations represent 19.5% and human rights 16%.

According to CR Magazine, “these weights reflect the increasing emphasis on managing the costs associated with environment and climate change, including the imminent pricing of carbon. They also indicate the understanding that employee relations and human rights are more important than ever in today’s labor market.”

The full methodology procedures and details are available via the Corporate Responsibility Officer ( press release.
